Chapter Ten

“I mean it,” Martha said. “I have no idea who you are, or if you’re really real.” Martha couldn’t help but think her words were turning into gibberish. “We need to set out some guidelines, if we’re going to coexist in this flat.”

“DIE.”

A cold bolt of fear shot up her spine. She needed to run, to dash out the door and not look back. Certainly, the street was better than this. She could live on the street. Could she live here?

“I am…am not going to die,” Martha said. Her voice sounded shaky, even to her. “And I am not leaving. So, let’s be reasonable about this.”

She received no reply, which she took as a bad sign. Yet, she wasn’t ready to give up yet.

“Who are you?” she asked.

No answer.

“I noticed you were painting. Are you an artist?”

No answer.

“I have had one-sided conversations for a long time, so I don’t mind it so much. But it would be better if you spoke up.”

She waited, but she received no answer, even as anxiety filled her body, causing her muscles to twitch. She had the feeling she would soon panic, and panic was a bad thing. Panic would send her running.

“I couldn’t help but overhear what you said about the light. You said it was wrong or something. And I quite understand. The skylight needs cleaning. I imagine no one could paint in gloom. Is that right?”

She received no answer, but then, no teacup had been thrown at her head either. Martha considered that progress.

“I have always heard that artists require their own special light, something that inspires. That makes sense. One can hardly be happy with diffused light, that hides the true colour of the paint. So…so, I’m proposing to clean the skylight for you. If I do that, will you show yourself so we can speak?”

“Yes.”

Martha let out a deep breath. “That is a very good idea and a very good start. I shall clean the glass first thing in the morning.”

“Now.”

“It’s getting late. The sun is setting, and I would hate to miss a spot because of the twilight. Besides, it looks as if it will rain in an hour or so. You wouldn’t want me to wash the skylight, only to have it dirtied by rain.”

“Now.”

Frustration accompanied the fear inside her. She was dealing with someone or something that was making unreasonable demands. That was hardly fair. Yet, did she have a choice? If she didn’t clean the skylight, then there was no guarantee glaring man would talk to her. If they didn’t talk, how was she to sleep? She didn’t think she could arrange herself so that she would be perfectly safe. After all, glaring man had been able to shove her head under water and strangle her. How was she to avoid that?

“All right,” Martha said. “I’ll start now. If it starts to rain, I will come in, no matter the condition of the skylight. That’s more than fair. I’ll be right back.”

Martha walked down to
